Vintage "The Star-Spangled Banner" Silk Printed Handkerchief with Music

Sale price$1,250.00

Presented is a finely executed vintage silk printed handkerchief featuring the music and lyrics of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” a beautiful example of American patriotic ephemera rendered in textile form. The handkerchief is bordered with a flag motif, with each corner displaying a square blue canton populated by 25 white stars, while the surrounding field is framed by nine alternating red and white stripes. At the center is a printed musical score titled “The Star-Spangled Banner,” with attribution to Francis Scott Key and Samuel Arnold at the upper margins. The composition is laid out across five staffs, complete with both treble and bass clefs, notated in three-quarter time and set in B-flat major with passages in G minor, accompanied by four stanzas of lyrics.

The anthem itself traces its origins to the War of 1812, when Francis Scott Key composed the poem “Defence of Fort M’Henry” after witnessing the bombardment of Baltimore in 1814. The verses were soon set to the tune of a popular English song, traditionally attributed to John Stafford Smith, though here credited to Samuel Arnold, reflecting the fluidity of early musical attributions in the nineteenth century. Over time, the song became a potent symbol of national identity and resilience, formally adopted as the national anthem in 1931.

Silk handkerchiefs such as this example belong to a rich tradition of printed musical and commemorative textiles that flourished during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These objects were both decorative and functional, often produced as souvenirs, keepsakes, or tokens of patriotic sentiment. Advances in textile printing allowed for increasingly detailed imagery, in this case legible musical notation, transforming the everyday handkerchief into a new medium for cultural expression. Silk, prized for its smooth surface and luminosity, was particularly well suited to such fine printing, lending an air of refinement to these ephemeral objects.
