Vintage Christmas Scene Handkerchief, Printed on Cotton, Circa 1890-1915
Presented is a charming antique Christmas handkerchief. Printed on one side by chromolithography, in rich tones of red, yellow, blue, and a light brown, this cotton even-weave handkerchief captures a festive and spirited domestic holiday scene. Known as an “event handkerchief” or “commemorative handkerchief,” this example has no manufacturer listed or date, yet is most likely from 1890-1915.
At its center unfolds a delightful Christmas scene of a family enjoying the music of the holiday season. A mother, dressed in late Victorian or Edwardian fashion, lovingly watches two young girls at the family’s upright piano. A young boy, dressed in a blue sailor-suit, plays on the floor with toys and a younger sibling. A father sits on the couch, behind a table sporting a decorated Christmas tree. The composition is framed by a decorative border of stars, garlands, baubles, and foliage, adding seasonal charm.
These commemorative printed handkerchiefs were popular, inexpensive keepsakes, produced in great numbers at the turn of the century. (Clark, Jr. Fenimore Art Museum). Surviving examples in such appealing condition are now increasingly scarce.
