Vintage Chicago Wooden Ballot Box, circa 1920s

Sale price$1,750.00

Presented is a vintage Chicago wooden ballot box dating to the early 1920s, an exceptional artifact of American civic life in the years immediately following the First World War. The box is constructed of wood, with a slotted top for the deposit of ballots and is fitted with a sturdy carrying handle. The box is stamped on both ends “The Property of Board of Elec. Comms. / Dearborn 2-3050,” in orange and white, indicating its ownership by the municipal election authorities. The front features a locked and windowed door, allowing officials to monitor the contents while maintaining security.

This ballot box dates to approximately 1920, a crucial moment in American political history. The election of that year was the first national contest held after the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which enfranchised women nationwide. This ballot box is a significant artifact, reflective of that expanded democratic participation. A comparable example can be found in the collection of the Newberry Library, underscoring the recognized historical significance of such material culture.
