Vintage Abraham Lincoln Seated Bookends
Presented is a pair of vintage bookends, featuring Abraham Lincoln seated on a bench. Lincoln sits with his arm outstretched as if to welcome a visitor; his hat rests on the bench beside him. In the background is the United States Capitol.
These bookends were modeled after the 1911 bronze statue by Gutzon Borglum that stands outside the Essex County Courthouse in Newark, New Jersey. In Borglum's research for the statue, he discovered that Lincoln often sat alone on a bench in the White Housegarden to gather his thoughts during the Civil War. Borglum’s informal composition of the President on a bench was an unexpected departure from the more monumental of Lincoln standing or seated on a throne.
These L-shaped bookends are weighty enough to hold up even large sets of books on a shelf. They would make a great and functional addition to any Americana or presidential collection.
