Vintage "1776" Brass American Eagle Bookends by Colonial Virginia
These appealing vintage brass bookends depict a bald eagle preparing for flight after perching on a base inscribed with “1776.” The bookends were made by Colonial Virginia, a crafter working out of Hampton, Virginia in 1972. The realistic detail of the eagle is highlighted by the elegant antiqued coloring of the brass bookends.
Eagles have long represented the United States and the bald eagle, in particular, has been the national symbol of the nation since 1782. As it is shown here, the eagle is looking stoically towards the distance while the “1776” base amplifies the patriotic tone of this vintage work.
