"Ulysses S. Grant" Portrait, Engraved by J.C. Buttre, after Anderson, 1885
This is a full-length, standing portrait of Ulysses S. Grant, engraved by John Chester Buttre, after a photograph by Anderson. The print was published in 1885 by George Stinson, in Portland, Maine. It was likely issued as a memorial portrait, following Grant’s passing in July of 1885.
The engraving presents a formal, dignified likeness of Grant, in the grand manner of nineteenth century presidential portraiture. Grant has a resolute expression, is formally but austerely dressed, and tucks one hand into his waistcoat, all emblematic of his calm, strong leadership. His restrained pose and unadorned dress emphasize that his power derives not from spectacle but from character and service. Grant’s other hand rests on a book and an unfurling map on a nearby table. The map recalls Grant’s significant military career, while the books situate him not merely as a general but as a leader engaged in the intellectual and administrative burdens of the presidency.
Grant stands in front of two large architectural columns and heavy, draped curtains. To Grant’s left is an ornate armchair with elaborate carved scrollwork and cabriole legs. The setting is very symbolic of the classical ideals of the Roman republic, while underscoring the ceremonial nature of the setting. The composition on a whole reinforces his stature as both military hero and statesman.
John Chester Buttre (1821-1893) was a prominent American engraver and lithographer. He first studied drawing in his hometown of Auburn, New York, and moved to New York City in 1841. There, he produced some 3,000 engraved portraits of American political and military figures, many of which he published in a three-volume work entitled The American Portrait Gallery in 1880-81.
