Throughout his career, Hagen won eleven major golf championships, eventually surpassed only by Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Hagen was considered one of the best match players in the sport and was noted to always have a good attitude, even when playing poorly.

Nicknamed "The Haig," Walter Hagen was celebrated not only for his extraordinary skill on the golf course, but also for his flair for luxury and showmanship. He famously remarked, "I never wanted to be a millionaire. I just wanted to live like one."
