Issued as a charming early twentieth century collection of fairy tales for young readers, The Tree Fairy and the Stories She Told gathers and adapts a large assortment of traditional stories, many of them German in origin, for American children. Opening with the premise of a woodland fairy recounting tales to children, the first story introduces the Tree Fairy herself, a magical figure who becomes the storyteller for a succession of imaginative narratives. The collection includes thirty-two tales, including “The Ten Fairies,” “The Poor Shoemaker,” “The Enchanted Mouse,” “Thumbaline,” “The Princess Who Would Not Laugh,” and “The Giant’s Heart.” Noyes’ adaptations blend older European folktale motifs with humorous and moralistic tales suitable for family reading and accessible to American children.
Minna B. Noyes was an early twentieth century editor, translator, and adaptor of children’s literature whose work focused primarily on the retelling of traditional fairy tales and folk narratives. Like many writers contributing to children’s publishing during the period, Noyes drew upon a wide body of earlier European folklore and tales, reshaping them for English-speaking audiences. Her other works include German Stepping-Stones, German Leaflets, and Twilight Stories.
