The patriotism of WWI aroused a new interest in the American flag, and spurred Emily Katherine Ide to publish a revised edition of her slim, but popular, book on the American flag. In her preface, Ide explains “the aim of this book is to tell the story of the American flag in a simple, concise manner for young and old. It is written at a time ‘when the flag of the United States has a deeper significance than ever before in the world’s history, when it is the hope of civilization.’” Ide outlines the origin of the American flag, its history, and development. She explains the rules for its use and construction and there is a chapter on the etiquette of the flag and the ceremonies relating to it, with the proper salutes. In this revised edition, Ide added “additional flag narratives and also more tributes, [and] flag quotations.”
The American Primary School Teacher Review said of Ide’s book, “Nowhere else in the same compass can there be found so much regarding the history of the American flag with so many eloquent tributes in prose, with so many inspiring tributes in verse. The whole conception is patriotic in the extreme and it is brought down to the present year. Miss Ide feels the glow of patriotic devotion and has given it effective voice in these pages” (Vol. 39, No. 10, June 1916).
