Presented is an original movie poster for the 1980 “The Empire Strikes Back,” the second installment in the original Star Wars Trilogy. Roger Kastel illustrated this one-sheet poster. At top is the tagline, “The Star Wars Saga Continues." Below is a composition illustration of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia, R2D2 and C390, with Darth Vader’s ominous black mask behind them. This Style-A poster is sometimes referred to as the “Gone With the Wind” version, because of Han and Leia’s romantic pose mimicking the famous pose between Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. Below the illustration, in white text, is the movie title “The Empire Strokes Back”, followed by the cast and credits billing block area. The 20th Century Fox symbol and PG rating box are both found in the lower portion of this vertical theatrical poster.
“The Empire Strikes Back ” was directed by Irvin Kershner, with a screenplay written by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, based on a story by George Lucas. It was produced by Gary Kutz. It is the second installment in the original Star Wars trilogy, following “A New Hope” (1977) and succeeded by “Return of the Jedi” (1983). The film starred Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Peter Meyhew, and Frank Oz.
“The Empire Strikes Back” was released in theatres on May 21, 1980. The film grossed $401.5 million worldwide in its initial theatrical run, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1980. It has since been followed by prequel and sequel trilogies that round out the "Skywalker saga".
