Looking Forward was the first autobiography written by a vice president while still holding office. Released as Bush prepared to run for president in 1988, the book serves as part memoir and part campaign statement. It introduces readers to his personal background, political views, and vision for America’s future. Bush reflects on his long career in public service, including his roles as congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, CIA director, and vice president under Ronald Reagan. He presents himself as a steady and pragmatic leader and highlights his years of domestic and international service. The book also lays out Bush’s beliefs about key issues facing the nation in the 1980s.
Looking Forward serves as both a reflection on Bush’s life in government and a statement of his guiding principles, written to connect his past service with his vision for the nation’s future.
