"John Ford's Rio Grande" Vintage Movie Poster, 1950
Presented is an original movie poster for John Ford’s Rio Grande. Rio Grande is a 1950 American romantic Western film directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. A Republic film, this is the third installment of Ford's "Cavalry Trilogy," following two RKO Pictures releases: Fort Apache (1948) and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949). Wayne plays the lead in all three films.
In Rio Grande, Wayne plays Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke, a former Union soldier posted on the Texas frontier with the U.S. 2nd Cavalry Regiment in the summer of 1879. Yorke is tasked with defending settlers against Apaches launching raids from the Mexican side of the river. Yorke’s son, played by Claude Jarman Jr., and estranged wife Maureen O'Hara, arrive at the fort and Yorke tries to reconcile with both.
The movie script was based on a short story "Mission With No Record" by James Bellah that appeared in The Saturday Evening Post on September 27, 1947. That story was inspired by historical events.
The film was shot in only 32 days in Monument Valley, Utah and was released on November 15, 1950. Reception to the movie was warm, with a New York Times critic claiming that the movie “travel[ed] a deeply rutted road in spinning a familiar story of military duty versus the dictates of the heart. But the horsemanship never was better, the Indians more dastardly and the cavalry never answered a bugle call more quickly.”
