John Adams Photogravure, after Healy, 1901
Presented is a 1901 photogravure portrait of President John Adams, after the famous 1860 oil painting by George Peter Alexander Healy. This head and shoulders portrait depicts our second president in his coat, white shirt, and cravat. The photogravure was issued as one of twenty four portraits in “The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents,” a large folio printed by the Gravure Company of America in 1901. Interleaved with letter pressed biological sketches by noted historians, these portraits featured the presidents George Washington through William McKinley.
John Adams (1735 - 1826) was an American statesman, attorney, diplomat, writer, founding father, and president. Before his presidency, he was a leader of the American Revolution and helped the colonies achieve independence from Great Britain. In the early years of the new nation, he served the U.S. government as a senior diplomat in Europe. Adams was the first person to hold the office of vice president of the United States, under President Washington, serving from 1789 to 1797.
Adams served as the second president of the United States from 1797 to 1801. He was the only president elected under the banner of the Federalist Party and also the first president to reside in the White House. Adams's term was dominated by the issue of the French Revolutionary Wars, and his insistence on American neutrality led to fierce criticism from both the Jeffersonian Republicans and from some in his own party, including Alexander Hamilton. Adams signed the controversial Alien and Sedition Acts, and built up the Army and Navy in the undeclared naval war with France.
