"Facsimile of the Signatures to the Declaration of Independence" by A.H. Wray, Engraved by J. W. Allen and E. McCabe, circa 1855

Sale price$1,250.00

Presented is a handsome steel engraving, a patriotic composition of the facsimile signatures of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.  The engraving is from John H. Hinton’s “The History and Topography of the United States of America.” It was published in Boston by S. Walker, circa 1855. As was common practice in Hinton's illustrated history books, the engraving is a product of several talented artists. The ornament was drawn by A. H. Wray and engraved by E. McCabe. The signatures were engraved by J. W. Allen.

The signatures to this iconic document shine at the center of the document, engraved with artful accuracy. The print’s composition is then further accented by a decorative border. Seated at top are allegorical figures of Justice and Liberty. Justice is depicted as a woman carrying scales and a sword and Liberty dons a liberty cap and carries a spear and shield. A spreadwing eagle is situated between them, perched on a U.S. shield, with the engraving’s title presented in unfurling scrolls.

The border of the print comprises the state seals of the original thirteen colonies. At the bottom is a vignette of the Capitol in Washington. The engraving is endorsed with a statement by John Quincy Adams, Department of State, dated April 19, 1819. The endorsement reads: “ I Certify that this is a CORRECT Copy of the original Declaration of Independence, deposited at this Department, and that I have compared all the Signatures with those of the original and have found them EXACT IMITATIONS."

This print is from one of the more popular nineteenth century view books, Hinton’s “The History and Topography of the United States of America.”  This work contained text and numerous illustrations documenting the history and geography of the United States. Hinton employed many of the best artists and illustrators of the period for this project. As such, the images are celebrated and collected as some of the finest small images and historical engravings of early nineteenth century America, both for their technical expertise and historical value.
