This is an early and important collection of the eulogies, speeches, and written tributes delivered following the death of George Washington, by prominent statesmen, close friends, and prominent writers of the time. The compilation starts with General Henry Lee’s eulogy, a 3,500-word speech delivered to Congress on December 28, 1799, in which he famously said Washington was "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.” Like many of the eulogies and speeches collected in this work, Lee praised Washington's contribution and dedication to the nation, and called upon citizens to act following Washington’s example.
Other orations, in order, are those of G. R. Minot, J. M. Sewall, Gouverneur Morris, Thomas Paine, John Brooks, David Ramsay, George Blake, Fisher Ames, Timothy Bigelow, John Davis, William Linn, Jeremiah Smith, Joseph Blyth, Isaac Parker, J. M. Mason, William Jackson, C. P. Sumner, Josiah Dunham, and J. T. Kirkland. Collectively these speeches highlighted Washington’s military leadership during the Revolutionary War, his statesmanship as President, and his character as a model citizen. Together, they form an incredible record of the reverence with which Americans viewed George Washington’s life and career.
