Herbert, Frank. Dune. Philadelphia, New York, London: Chilton Company, 1965. Book Club Edition. In the original illustrated dust jacket and red cloth boards, with silver embossed titles to the spine.
Presented is a book club edition of Dune by Frank Hubert. The book was published by Chilton Company in Philadelphia, New York, and London, in 1965, in the same year as the first edition printing. It features the original dust jacket, with art by John Schoenherr on the front panel and a map on the back panel, and original red cloth boards with silver embossed titles to the spine.
The publication history of Dune first began with serialization, as “Dune World,” in Analog Science Fact & Science Fiction magazine from December 1963 through February 1964. In 1965, Herbert returned with the serialization of “Prophet of Dune,” across 5 issues of Analog, from January through May of that year. “Prophet of Dune” was the feature cover story in both the January and March 1965 issues of Analog, with famous illustrations by John Schoenherr.
Dune the novel was an expanded, reworked combination of the two serials “Dune World” and “Prophet of Dune” from Analog magazine. The first edition of the novel was published by Chilton Company in 1965. They reused Schoenherr’s artwork from the January 1965 magazine cover on the book’s dust jacket design. This is the book club edition, published later that year.
Dune follows the young main character Paul Atreides to his destiny as a messianic leader on the desert planet of Arrakis. An epic story arising from the ecology, religion, and politics of place, it is regarded as one of the greatest science fiction novels. Although book sales were slow for the first edition, Dune was an immediate critical success. Dune received the first Nebula Award for best novel in 1965 and shared the 1966 Hugo Award with Roger Zelazny’s This Immortal. It has since become one of the most popular titles in science fiction, with translation into more than 20 languages and almost 20 million copies sold.
