Capitol Dome Cufflinks
Presented are round, vintage-style Capitol Dome cufflinks. The Capitol Building’s dome has an intriguing history. Originally planned as a much smaller building overall, George Washington laid the cornerstone for the Capitol with Masonic ceremonies in 1793. However, due to funding shortages and various setbacks, the building was not completed when the British burned it down in 1814. A rainstorm saved the building from complete destruction. When the building was rebuilt, the dome was made more prominent at the request of James Monroe, even though the architect thought it too large for the rest of the building. Later, in the 1860s, the Capitol Building was once again under reconstruction and this time, the dome was made even taller as the building was expanded to accommodate the growing House and Senate. This expansion phase produced the classic and recognizable version of the capitol dome as we know it today and as it is depicted here.
These vintage-styled cufflinks make a great gift for those who live in or visit our nation's capital or those interested in American history.
