Swinton first published Campaigns of the Army of the Potomac in 1866, immediately following the end of the Civil War. The book offers a comprehensive history of the Army of the Potomac's creation, battles, and leaders during the course of the war, and provided a snapshot of how the victorious North viewed its main army. As a reporter for the New York Times, Swinton witnessed several battles and was familiar with many of the chief officers, who provided him with their memoirs and diaries at the end of the war. He also interviewed many of the Confederate officers to gain their perspectives.
