In addition to serving as the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman, explorer, soldier, author, naturalist, and reformer. His 1899 Big Game Hunting comprises two earlier books written by Roosevelt during his time in the Dakota Badlands. Originally titled Hunting Trips of a Ranchman and The Wilderness Hunter, the two publications were first published before Roosevelt’s time in the White House. These early writings provide a unique insight into the young life of the president and the inspirations for his conservationist policies.

Written in 1885 and 1893 respectively, Hunting Trips of a Ranchman and The Wilderness Hunter describe young Roosevelt’s exploits in the west as he recovered from losing both his mother and wife in 1884. Full of exciting stories and intriguing descriptions, Roosevelt’s Big Game Hunting provides his personal thoughts, advice, and tales of hunting in the United States. This intriguing book combines Roosevelt’s memoir with a travelog and combines accounts of hunting lore and culture with academic descriptions of grizzly bears.
