"Battle Between the United States and the Macedonian" Engraving, Published by Johnson, Wilson & Co., after Alonzo Chappel, 1874
Presented is an original 1874 engraving, “Battle Between the United States and the Macedonian,” published by Johnson, Wilson & Co, after Alonzo Chappel. The engraving portrays one of the defining naval engagements of the War of 1812. In the composition, the American frigate United States and the British frigate Macedonian locked in close battle, their broadsides obscured by dense cannon smoke, as shot tears through sails and rigging. The British vessel is depicted in evident distress, with a broken mast and rigging, while the American frigate advances beneath a boldly flying national ensign.
The battle occurred on October 25, 1812, when the forty four gun United States, commanded by Stephen Decatur, encountered the thirty eight gun Macedonian under the command of John Surman Carden in the Atlantic. Employing superior gunnery and tactical seamanship, Decatur inflicted devastating damage, before compelling the British frigate to surrender. The captured Macedonian was subsequently brought to the United States and entered into American naval service, becoming one of the most celebrated prizes of the war. The victory was greeted with widespread acclaim and helped establish the international reputation of the United States Navy.
Alonzo Chappel (1832–1887) was an American painter, portraitist, and illustrator celebrated for his historical scenes and portraits of prominent American statesmen, military leaders, and naval heroes. Contemporary critics praised his work for its strong characterization, skillful composition, and historical accuracy, and he enjoyed a reputation as one of the leading historical illustrators of his day. Though few original paintings survive, many of his works were widely reproduced as steel engravings, helping to shape nineteenth-century Americans’ visual understanding of their nation's history.
