Antique Belgium “Notre Dame de Hal” Medal on Faceted Garnet Bracelet
This antique Belgian “Notre Dame de Hal” medal has been fashioned into a bracelet by vintage jewelry designers, Intellectual Property. The small round medal’s obverse features a raised-relief depiction of the Our Lady of Hal statue, a revered 13th-century black Madonna statue located in St. Martin's Basilica in Halle, Belgium. According to legend, the statue turned black from smoke during a fire or by catching canon balls during a 1580 siege. The medal has a border of text, in raised relief. The text reads ”Notre Dame Del Hal Priez Pour Nous”. Translated, the phrase reads “Our Lady of Halle, pray for us" and is an invocation addressed to the Virgin Mary, asking for protection and intercession. The reverse depicts Jesus in raised relief. The medal is presented on a strand of faceted garnet, with a sterling silver toggle.
Searching the braderies and antique shops throughout Europe, the founders of Intellectual Property, Mary and Hallie, specialize in finding unique antique medals and transforming them into one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. Their designs highlight the legacy and integrity of the original pieces, artfully bringing the past into the present.
