"America's Two Greatest Documents" Vintage Poster by L. P. Meissner, 1924
Presented is a scarce 1924 patriotic poster entitled, “America's Two Greatest Documents” celebrating the enduring legacy of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. The poster was drawn by L. P. Meissner, published by The Fellowship Forum, and printed by William J. Rogers, Photo. Lithographer, in Washington, D.C.
The poster’s design is set within a patriotic shield border, with a background of white stars on a blue field and red and white stripes. Titled at top, “America’s Two Greatest Documents,” the composition centers on two unfurling scrolls, the Declaration of Independence at left and the Constitution of the United States at right. The two documents hold a central place in American history and identity. The Declaration of Independence, adopted in 1776, formally announced the colonies’ separation from Great Britain and articulated foundational principles of liberty, equality, and natural rights. The Constitution of the United States, ratified in 1787, established the framework of the federal government and enshrined a system of checks and balances designed to preserve freedom and order. These documents represent both the philosophical tenets and the practical structure of the nation’s government, making their pairing in this poster especially significant as a visual expression of American ideals.
A ring of laurel leaves connects the two documents and also serves as a border for an inset center illustration of the United States Capitol. The Capitol is depicted from its eastern facade, with grand marble columns, neoclassical architecture, and the Statue of Freedom on the top of the dome. At lower left is another inset illustration of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where both the Declaration and the Constitution were debated and adopted by the Founding Fathers of the United States. At lower right is an inset illustration of Mount Vernon, the home of President George Washington.
The Fellowship Forum was a Washington-based weekly newspaper and civic organization active in the early twentieth century. Created as “a national voice for protestant fraternal America,” the fellowship Forum promoted Americanism, civic responsibility, and patriotic education. In addition to their newspaper, they often issued printed materials, like educational posters and pamphlets, that emphasized the nation’s founding ideals and institutions.
