"A Strong Navy Guarantees Peace. Navy Day October 27, 1945" Vintage WWII Poster, 1945
This original Navy Day propaganda poster from 1945 features a bold modernist design depicting U.S. Navy warships and aircraft set against the canton and stripes of the American flag. Across the top appears the phrase “A Strong Navy Guarantees Peace,” while the lower margin reads “Navy Day” and the date “October 27, 1945” in striking black and orange lettering.
The poster was commissioned by the Government Printing Office to commemorate Navy Day 1945, celebrated only weeks after V-J Day. That year’s event served as a triumphant public showcase for the victorious Navy, with millions of Americans gathering nationwide to witness the return of the fleet. The message was clear and deliberate: American naval strength was the guarantor of postwar peace and global stability.
Produced in a smaller format, this example is mounted on its original cardboard backing and retains a folding stand on the reverse, indicating it was designed for tabletop or countertop display in offices, stores, or public venues.
The first “Navy Day “ was celebrated on October 27, 1922. October 27, 1922 was suggested by the Navy League to recognize Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday. Roosevelt had been an Assistant Secretary of the Navy and supported a strong Navy, as well as the idea of Navy Day. In addition, October 27, 1922 was the anniversary of a 1775 report issued by a special committee of the Continental Congress favoring the purchase of merchant ships as the foundation of an American Navy.
