Presented is a Limited Edition, Binder’s Copy of A Century of Golf: Western Golf Association 1899-1999 by Tim Cronin. A Century of Golf is an in-depth history of the Western Golf Association. The book celebrates the rich tradition of the WGA, both on and off the links. This special printing was published by Sleeping Bear Press in 1998 in an edition of 100 and is beautifully bound by Felton Bookbinding Ltd. It is bound in full green leather boards with gilt ruling on the front and back boards, gilt titles and a blind embossed Western Golf Association crest to the front board, raised bands, gilt titles and gilt stamps to the spine, new marbled endpapers bordered with lacy gilt dentelle work, and a matching leather edged green cloth slipcase.
Throughout the 20th century, the American Western Golf Association has been a leader in the golf world through sponsorship of the prestigious Western Open. This is the story of the Association and its work in the world of golf. From the Western Open with its incredible list of past champions to the Chick Evans Scholarship Fund, which sends dozens of deserving caddies to college every year, the WGA has been planted into the very roots of the game of golf. Hagen, Hogan, Snead, Palmer, and Nicklaus all competed and won at the Western Open and left with a greater understanding of what makes the WGA different from any other organization in sports.
This book celebrates the first 100 years of the WGA- 100 years of championship golf, 100 years of philanthropy, and a century of great stories. It features forewords by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus and is richly illustrated through with historical photographs.
Author Tim Cronin spent a year researching the real story of the formation of the Western Golf Association and the subsequent incorporation into the WGA of the Evans Scholars Foundation. Cronin, an award-winning sportswriter for The Daily Southtown in greater Chicago, has covered golf, the Western Open, John Deere Classic, and BMW Championship, and the affairs of the WGA in particular, since 1979. He has also produced golf telecasts, video documentaries on the game, and is a frequent contributor to Chicago District Golfer, Golf Chicago and area newspapers, as well as The Associated Press. Cronin chairs the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame selection committee and is the author of ten books.
