48-Star American Naval Jack Flag
Presented is a large 48-star American Naval Jack. This impressive wool flag features a rich navy flag with a field of 48 white stars. The stars are arranged in six rows of eight stars, each whimsically printed to mimic a star shimmering in the night sky. The flag has a machine-sewn white binding along the hoist, with its original rope.
The Union Jack was adopted on June 14, 1777, alongside the U.S. national flag itself. Since then, the jack’s design has consisted of the canton of the national flag, with each star added to the national flag being added to the Union Jack also. The U.S. Navy jack is flown when a ship is moored or at anchor, or on special occasions. It is flown from the jackstaff at the bow of the ship, and must be the same size as the union of the ensign, which is flown the stern. The jack is not flown when the ship is under way. The process of changing between the jack and the ensign is called shifting colors
The 48-star Navel Jack was flown for 47 years, starting on July 4, 1912 and official until the admission of Alaska to the Union in 1959. It was flown during World War 1, World War II, and the Korean War.
