1944 "Dated Events War Map" by Stanley Turner
Presented is a striking WWII pictorial map by Stanley Turner, published in 1944. The map is a progress map, chronicling major events in the war up to September 1944. The legend at bottom right identifies the naval bases of the various countries involved in the effort and uses color-coding to indicate which countries are part of the Axis (green), conquered by the Axis (gray), former Axis countries conquered by the U.S. and Britain (red), and neutral (white). Two compass rose-like diagrams at bottom show the distance and direction of various cities relative to Berlin and Tokyo. There are several battleships in the oceans, and Japanese planes are shown swarming above Hawaii to mark the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The bottom margin lists that this is the 20th edition in this popular “Dated Events War Map” series. The series has at least 28 known editions, and was regularly updated with new information, troop movements, and battle outcomes. The most recent events on this edition include "Brussels Liberated Sept 4-44," "Finland signs Armistice Sept 4-44," the "White Lime - Battle Line Sept 5 -44" in Ukraine, and "Japan Bombed Aug 20-44 by B-29 Super-Fortress." An inset at bottom left shows the recent invasion of France, which began in June of that year. Another inset at top zooms into the Balkan states.
The map was issued as a promotional piece for General Plating & Rustproofing Company in Minneapolis. It was produced by C.C. Petersen Advertising in Toronto.
