Two Exceptional World War II Pictorial Maps

Throughout WWII, maps were essential tools for informing, educating, and inspiring both military personnel and civilians on the home front. I am pleased to present two exceptional recent acquisitions that capture the wartime experience, through richly illustrated pictorial maps.

The first is Stanley Turner's 1944 “Dated Events War Map,” a fascinating pictorial progress map documenting the global conflict as it stood in September 1944. The map was produced in an evolving series that tracked the course of the war, recording major military campaigns and diplomatic developments with extraordinary immediacy. This twentieth edition includes newly added annotations on the liberation of Brussels, Finland's armistice, the battle lines in Ukraine, and the recent B-29 bombing campaign against Japan. Color coding distinguishes Axis powers, occupied nations, liberated territories, and neutral countries, while detailed insets examine the Allied invasion of France and the complex situation in the Balkans. The map is a great example of how wartime events were communicated to the public, as history unfolded.

Equally compelling is our “Aviation Panorama: A Pictorial History of American Aviation,” a richly illustrated map celebrating the evolution of flight and the achievements of American aviation. Created during the height of World War II, in 1943, the map traces America's aeronautical accomplishments from Octave Chanute's pioneering glider experiments and the Wright brothers' first powered flight to Amelia Earhart's record-setting journeys, Howard Hughes' groundbreaking flights, and the emergence of the helicopter. Bordering the map are illustrations of the latest and most technologically advanced American military aircraft alongside squadron insignia and scenes honoring the courage of the men and women of the United States Army Air Forces. The map is a reflection of the pride, optimism, and technological ambition that characterized the American homefront during the war.

The “Dated Events War Map” chronicles the conflict as it unfolded across the globe, while the “Aviation Panorama” celebrates the innovations and aviation achievements that helped shape its outcome.
