Helen Keller's Personal Reading Copy of "The New Outlook for the Blind: Braille Edition," 1960

This is Helen Keller’s personal reading copy of The New Outlook for the Blind, December 1960, Volume 54, Number 10. The periodical is inscribed in the upper right corner. Inscription reads: “Please return to Keller, 5311 Stonegate, Dallas” in blue ballpoint ink.

The New Outlook for the Blind was originally the Quarterly Record of the Progress and Welfare of the Blind, published by the Massachusetts Association for Promoting the Interests of the Blind and edited by Charles F.F. Campbell. It continued under the name The New Outlook for the Blind from 1959-1976, during which it was published by the American Foundation for the Blind. It was then renamed once again as the Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness. Featuring scholarly articles, editorials, and research briefs, the journal has amplified the voices of people with vision loss, and have been the engine of advancement and opportunity for every person affected by blindness or vision loss.

This December 1960 issue was edited by M. Robert Barnet and Howard M. Liechty. The title cover lists the publishing location at 1839 Frankfurt Avenue, Louisville 6, Kentucky, and Editorial offices at 15 West 16th Street, New York, New York. This issue has 90 pages, 89 of which are interpoint embossed with braille. At the time of publication, a yearly subscription to The New Outlook for the Blind was $1.50.

CONDITION: 

Inscription on top right corner is in blue ink and in very good condition. Paper is healthy, albeit a little brittle. Minimal wear on cover, as expected with age and past use. Front cover a mix of printed text and interpoint brail embossed printing, all other pages only interpoint brail embossed printing. 

Book is housed in a custom archival chemise, which rest inside a quarter leather black clamshell case. Clamshell has gilt tooling, raised bands,and red leather accents on the spine. Front of clamshell features a black and white photographic portrait of Keller.
