"Produce for your Navy. Victory Begins at Home!" Vintage WWII Poster

Presented is an original WWII Navy propaganda poster, illustrated by John Falter. The poster illustrates Admiral William Halsey at center, as he drops his binoculars to look into the distance. Halsey is surrounded by three blue-toned vignettes of battle scenes. The vignettes are titled “Hit Hard!,” “Hit Fast!,” and “Hit Often!” in bold black letters. At the bottom, the poster urges viewers to “Produce for your Navy” and reminds them that “VICTORY BEGINS AT HOME!” in bold, black letters.

This poster was created for the Navy Department’s Industrial Incentive Division and published by Einson-Freeman Co. Inc, in New York. This poster would have been used in factories to motivate wartime workers on the Home Front. 

John Philip Falter (1910-82) was an American artist and illustrator. Born in Nebraska, Falter He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Art Students League in New York on a scholarship, and the Grand Central School of Art in New York. Among his teachers were Mahonri Young, George Wright and Monte Crews. Falter was best known for his 129 cover illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post. 

Falter served in the Navy as a Chief Boatswain’s Mate during World War II. Later, he was commissioned a Lieutenant on special art assignments. Falter designed over 300 recruiting posters during World War II. After the war, he illustrated over 40 books for Reader’s Digest and completed many portrait commissions, including those of Admiral Halsey, Louis Armstrong, Olivia de Havilland, James Cagney, Mrs. Clark Clifford, and tenor John Charles Thomas. Falter was a member of the Society of Illustrators, the Players, and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. In 1976, he was elected to the Society of Illustrators’ Hall of Fame.

CONDITION:

Color lithograph. Good condition, with only light fading and toning. Colors vibrant. Horizontal and vertical creases at centerfolds. Small tear at top center margin, since stabilized. Bottom left margin includes publishing information. Bottom right margin is printed with “Incentive Division, Navy Department - OC 4 35M.” 

Poster is framed to archival standards, in a black and gold custom-built frame, acid-free backing, and UV Plexiglas.
