Vintage Abraham Lincoln Seated Bookends

Presented is a pair of vintage bookends, featuring Abraham Lincoln seated on a bench. The scene is captured in raised relief on the front of the bookends, with the text “Abraham Lincoln” at upper left.

These bookends were modeled after the 1911 bronze statue by Gutzon Borglum that stands outside the Essex County Courthouse in Newark, New Jersey. In Borglum's research for the statue, he discovered that Lincoln often sat alone on a bench in the White House garden to gather his thoughts during the Civil War. Borglum’s informal composition of the President on a bench was an unexpected departure from the more monumental of Lincoln standing or seated on a throne.

Constructed of bronze-coated iron, these L-shaped bookends are weighty enough to hold up even large sets of books on a shelf. They would make a great and functional addition to any Americana or presidential collection. 

CONDITION:

Good condition. Bronze-coated iron. Stamped on the back of the bookend by the maker. Green felt on the bottom. Bookends show light signs of wear from age and past use, most noticeable on felted bottoms.
