Vintage Brass and Green Marble Eagle Bookends

This is a vintage pair of eagle bookends, dating to the early 20th century. The bookends feature brass eagles affixed to green marble bases. The eagles appear to be in mid-flight, with widely spread and open wings that arch upwards. The eagles' heads are positioned down and their feet are perched on a round brass ball. 

The eagle motif in décor and folk art has been widely used throughout our nation's history, most notably as part of our Great Seal. The founders of the United States were fond of comparing their new republic with the Roman Republic, in which eagle imagery, usually the golden eagle, was prominent. On June 20, 1782, the Continental Congress adopted the design for the Great Seal of the United States depicting a bald eagle grasping 13 arrows and an olive branch with its talons.

Very good condition, considering past use. Green marble base with minor scratches.  Dimensions: 7 1/2" H x 5" W x 4" D, each.
