"Colorado" Vintage United Airlines Travel Poster, circa 1970s

Offered is a vintage travel poster for United Airlines from the 1970s. This advertisement poster shows Colorado as one of United Airlines' alluring travel destinations. The design features two men fishing along a rushing river, surrounded by picturesque trees and mountains. The work was designed by artist Thomas Hoyne, with his signature in the plate visible along the rocks on the right side.

Founded in the 1920s, United Airlines has grown to be one of the world's largest airlines. The company got their start delivering mail, as most airlines did at the time, and later shifted to passenger travel. Posters such as this one were used to advertise the destinations customers could travel to with United. By highlighting scenic landscape depictions and attractive monuments, these posters encouraged flight ticket sales and global tourism.

Thomas Hoyne was a well known artist, best recognized as a painter of maritime art. A former Navy officer, Hoyne began his career as a commercial artist, drawing advertisements for companies such as Green Giant and Charmin. He also designed multiple other posters for United Airlines aside from this one, where the destination was highlighted with depictions of famous city monuments or outdoor scenes.

The poster features a scenic view of fishermen along a river nestled in the Colorado mountains. The image is painterly in its style, with visible paint strokes emulated from the original design in the lithograph. The work includes "United Airlines" printed boldly at the bottom in black lettering.
