Offered is an original World War II poster dating to 1944. The vintage poster was issued by the U.S. Government Printing Office and was prepared and distributed by the Army Information Branch of the Army Service Forces. The image depicts a large battleship across the background of an American flag, with a title that reads "Your battleship and her requirements." The poster serves as an informational guide to the requirements to operate a BB, with details such as "2,500,000 man hours for design," "electrical plant for all needs of a city of 20,000," and "9 1/2 acres or 404,000 sq. ft. of decks and platforms" all listed with small illustrations.
This poster was designed for Volume III, No. 58 of Newsmap and was published on May 29, 1944. The U.S. Navy designed and issued the work as part of an educational initiative, through the Educational Services Section.
During WWII, this informational poster would have educated the public of all that was necessary to maintain such a large and dominating vessel. The right side table includes details for assembling the battleship, as well as the necessary goods and services that would be crucial for upkeep each year. The number of necessary goods were monumental. Per year, it is estimated that each battleship crew would go through 9,000,000 gallons of fuel, 10,000 pounds of wheat, and even 60,000 quarts of ice cream.
Overall very good condition. Some light, scattered staining, with some visible fold lines. No severe tears to paper or losses. The poster has been framed according to conservation standards in a custom archival frame.
Framed dimensions: 50 1/2" H x 38 1/2" W x 2" D.
