This is a WWII Aircraft Insignia poster, prepared and distributed by the Army Orientation Course, Special Service Division, Service of Supply, War Department. The poster was printed in November 1942.
The poster depicts a birds-eye perspective of WWII fighter aircrafts facing off in the clouds. At left are the Allied powers; at right are the Axis fighter planes. Each plane has painted insignia on wings and and each model is labelled near the right wing in small type.
A border of Aircraft insignia for 46 countries surrounds the epic aircraft scene. The border shows insignia designs for both the wing and rudder designs, and in the case of the United Kingdom, shows the fuselage and fin designs as well. Countries are arranged alphabetically, starting with Argentina and ending with Yugoslavia.
The bottom margin is printed with copyright information, which reads: "Aircraft insignia are subject to change constantly. These are based on information available up to November 20, 1942." and "Prepared and Distributed by Army Orientation Course, Special Service Division, Service of Supply, War Department. " The poster is signed in stone by artist Jack Coggins, at lower right.
This is an original color lithograph, in very good condition. Colors are vibrant and show no signs of fading. Paper is healthy- no tears or foxing present. Poster is artfully and archivally presented in a custom-built black and gold frame. Framed dimensions: 43"H x 58"W x 2"D.
