Offered is a WMF tennis trophy dating to 1890. This silver plated trophy celebrates the sport of tennis with designs in low relief around the body of the trophy. The piece includes multiple athletes playing tennis, with both men and women enjoying the sport. The top of the trophy is intricately rendered with arches and decorative engraving. The base is also decorative with floral designs and a four-footed stand.
The silver piece was designed by the German tableware manufacturing company Wurttemberg Metalware Factory, or WMF, in the late 19th century. The WMF was founded in 1853 and was originally called Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer. The company specialized in metal ware repair, and soon became known for their unique tableware designs in the Art Nouveau style. They are still known today for their classic and iconic silver designs.
