WMF Silver-Plated Trophy, Circa Early 20th Century

Offered is a standing silver plated trophy, dating to the early 20th century. This elegant trophy has large arched handles on either side, a decorated lid, and a sleek shaft. The entire piece stands on a dark wooden base. The silver plated trophy has multiple design elements, with dragon heads and feather details on the handles and scalloped engravings along the chalice and lid. The trophy is embellished with the engraved words reading "The Makepeace Floating Trophy, South African Grand Prix" and then the initials "Z.Y.C." below.

The silver piece was designed by the German tableware manufacturing company Wurttemberg Metalware Factory, or WMF, in the early 20th century. The WMF was founded in 1853 and was originally called Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer. The company specialized in metal ware repair, and soon became known for their unique tableware designs in the Art Nouveau style. They are still known today for their classic and iconic silver designs.


Very good condition. Some light tarnish and slight discoloration along handles.
