Vintage "Statue of Liberty Centennial" Hermès Silk Scarf by Joachim Metz

Presented is a vintage Hermès silk scarf entitled "Statue of Liberty Centennial" by Joachim Metz. The scarf was designed as a centennial scarf in commemoration of the gifting of the Statue of Liberty to the United States in 1886.

The scarf highlights a strong relationship between France and the United States. Joachim Metz’s design features Lady Liberty in center with her iconic pointed crown. The figure is surrounded by both American and French national flags, with sheaves of wheat, stars, and torches along the border.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the United States in 1886. Near the end of the American Civil War, when the United States was close to redefining the nation as a whole, French historian Edouard de Laboulaye proposed that France recognize America’s success as a nation of democracy. Laboulaye proposed the Statue of Liberty as a gift to recognize American freedom. The statue, standing 46 meters, was designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The metal framework was built by the civil engineer of the Eiffel Tower, Gustave Eiffel.

Hermès has produced a significant amount of scarves in commemoration of American feats. The scarves often portray a scene of unity and companionship between France and America, as is shown in this example. Upon release, the scarf was made available in only 14 U.S. Hermès boutiques. The colorway is vibrant, featuring dominant colors of royal blue, red, white, and gold set against a dark background.
