Vintage American Eagle Bookends by Baldwin Brass
Offered is a set of vintage brass eagle bookends. Each bookend depicts a wingspread eagle clutching a bundle of arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in the right talon. When set against books, the base of the bookends slips underneath and the eagles appear to be freestanding, without additional backboards for support. This set of bookends was produced by the American company Baldwin Brass.
The eagle design is inspired by Charles Thomson's design for the U.S. Great Seal and is full of symbolism. The arrows, a bundle of thirteen, is symbolic of the original thirteen colonies and signifies unity as one. The talon with the olive branch emulates a desire for peace, but the ever-readiness for war if necessary. The eagle also appears to be biting its own tail feathers. This most likely references the ancient symbolism of ouroboros, which is a symbol for wholeness and infinity. The eagle itself, the national bird of the U.S., represents American strength and longevity as a nation.
