Roosevelt, Theodore, The Winning of the West. New York: The Knickerbocker Press, 1908. Signed by Theodore Roosevelt. Early Allegheny Edition. Four-volume set. Housed in custom slipcase.
This four-volume work by Theodore Roosevelt is an early edition, published in 1908, of the special Alleghany edition by the Knickerbocker Press, a subdivision of G.P. Putnam’s and Sons. Titled The Winning of the West, the set includes a signature by Theodore Roosevelt on the first free end page. All four volumes retain their original decorative bindings and are housed in a matching custom built slipcase.
These books offer an important history of American westward expansion during the early national period with emphasis on the Northwest and Southwest territories in the late 1780s and 1790s. The "West" in this book is the trans- Appalachian frontier from the French and Indian War through the end of the 18th century, but the work certainly embodies the attitudes toward expansion which Roosevelt demonstrated after he became president.
Overall very good condition. The four-volume set includes the original green cloth bindings with beautiful gilt embossed decorations. Theodore Roosevelt’s signature is tipped in with a decorative border. The signature paper is mildly foxed but the signature is dark and legible. Internally, the pages are clean. All volumes are housed in a custom archival slipcase designed to match the green cloth binding.
