Presented is an early copy from 1859 of James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1. The book was illustrated in black and white by F. O. C. Darley and published out of New York. Accompanying the book is a check signed and dated by the author, neatly pasted in the book. The signature is bold and visible. The date reads May 23rd, 1840.

The historical novel is set in 1757 during the French and Indian War.  The book takes place in upper New York state wilderness, close to where author Cooper grew up. Cooper’s story influenced popular opinion about American Indians and the frontier territory in the United States during that time.

This early edition is finely rebound in full brown calf leather with an embossed motif of a Native American on the front board. The book features raised bands and gilt tooling on the spine, marbled endpapers, and a gilt top edge. Pages are in overall good condition, especially for age, and show minimal staining or foxing. The volume is housed in a custom-made, matching brown slipcase.
