This model was hand-built by artist Kenneth Britten in 1999 and depicts the English “Smack” HERO.
The model’s dimensions are 44"L x 41 1/4"H x 17 1/2"W for a scale of 3/8"=1'.
The original ship was built around 1825 and sailed from the port of Leith near the Scottish capitol of Edinburgh. The ship was a heavy, burdensome vessel with a short, deep hull, small deadrise, rounded bilge, a full entrance and a hollow run; all of which gave good cargo capacity and enabled the vessel to sit upright in harbors that dried out at low water. Hedderwick's plans give dimensions as 73' 2" (keel and forerake) by 23' 6" by 12' 6" and 173 tons.
The model is beautifully presented in a glass and mahogany case and is an exact replica of the original ship.
