"The Flags of the Principal Nations of the World" Engraving by R. L. Barnes, 1837
Presented is an early 1837 hand-colored engraving of “The Flags of the Principal Nations of the World.” This print was engraved and published by Rufus L. Barnes in Philadelphia. The chart features 98 flags associated with countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and the United States, as well as the ensigns of merchant companies. Flag sheets and charts like this one were made primarily for the use of sea captains and ship chandlers to identify the nationality of ships in open waters.
This chart, engraved by Barnes, was prepared for inclusion in the “Accompaniment to Mitchell’s Map of the World,” a volume supplementing Mitchell’s impressive wall map drafted that same year. As such, there are two states of this chart, this separately-issued engraving by Barnes and another issued by S. A. Mitchell. The two states were published in 1837.
The flags on this chart offer an interesting snapshot of the powerful nations of the early 19th century. Many countries have multiple flags depicted, including national and nautical flags. The American flag is represented with 26-stars, reflective of the recent admission of Michigan to the Union. Notably, the flag of the short-lived Republic of Texas is depicted. Its ensign has a blue canton bearing a single star and 13 alternating red and white stripes. Additional interesting flags include Hawaii, and flags of merchant companies like the Russian American Company and the East India Company.
