The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac, 1958

Kerouac, Jack. The Dharma Bums. New York: The Viking Press, 1958. First edition, quarter leather binding with a matching cloth slipcase.

Presented is the first edition of Kerouac’s celebrated follow-up to the classic of his generation, On the Road. This is a first edition copy that was published out of New York in 1958.

“There were three books that really shaped Kerouac’s public image, the three that came out within a year of each other in 1957 and 1958: On the Road, The Subterraneans and The Dharma Bums” (Charters, 295). The Dharma Bums was published only a year after On the Road and it resulted in complete success. The Dharma Bums blended prose with poetry to produce a precursor for works by authors such as Timothy Leary or Ken Kesey.

This first edition book has been bound in green quarter calf leather and cloth. The spines feature raised bands and gilt tooling. The book is elegantly housed in a custom green cloth slipcase.
