Kerouac, Jack. The Dharma Bums. New York: The Viking Press, 1958. First edition, quarter leather binding with a matching cloth slipcase.
Presented is the first edition of Kerouac’s celebrated follow-up to the classic of his generation, On the Road. This is a first edition copy that was published out of New York in 1958. The book has been attractively rebound with quarter leather and cloth boards and is housed in a custom-built protective slipcase.
“There were three books that really shaped Kerouac’s public image, the three that came out within a year of each other in 1957 and 1958: On the Road, The Subterraneans and The Dharma Bums” (Charters, 295). The Dharma Bums was published only a year after On the Road and it resulted in complete success. Narrating the events directly after On The Road, Kourac’s The Dharma Bums blended prose with poetry to produce an influential precursor for works by authors such as Timothy Leary or Ken Kesey.
Overall very good condition. This first edition book has been professionally rebound in green quarter calf leather and cloth. The spine features raised bands and gilt tooling. The internal pages are clean and bright with no notable damage. The book is housed in a protective archival green cloth slipcase.
