This handsome limited edition of The Declaration of Independence is numbered 4 of only 500 copies. Signed on the last text page by both Robert Frank and David Armitage, this beautiful book has all hand-made pages. Opposite the full title page is a photogravure of Robert Frank’s photo from his The Americans publication. Immediately following the full text of the Declaration of Independence, David Armitage provides a descriptive and informative afterward. The book itself is bound in the original publisher’s blue cloth boards with a blue morocco leather label displaying the gilt embossed title. All edges are trimmed save the bottom deckled edge. The book is housed in a matching blue cloth clamshell with a lining inside to protect the work from dust, scratches, and other harmful damage.
David Armitage is a renowned Professor of History and the former Chair of the History Department at Harvard University. Highly published and respected throughout the academic community, Armitage provides the reader with an afterward concerning the impact of the Declaration of Independence both domestically and abroad. He discusses the origins of the ideas in the document as well as the prominent and impactful events that stemmed from the declaration beyond the initial separation from Great Britain.
Robert Frank was one of the most celebrated photographers of the 20th century. Born in Zurich, he was fascinated with America and her culture. In 1955, he was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship allowing him to embark on a two year trip to the U.S. There he took over 28,000 photos, eighty-three of which were published in The Americans. The Americans remains one of the most important photography books ever published. The patriotic photogravure included in The Declaration of Independence is one of the public’s most beloved photos taken by Frank.
Overall very good condition with no notable damage to the book. This large format book is bound in blue cloth with blue morocco leather label featuring the gilt embossed title. The handmade pages are clean and bright and the edges are trimmed apart from the bottom deckled edge. The signatures by Robert Frank and David Armitage are clear and dark with one written in pencil and the other in blue ink. The protective matching clamshell is in very good condition with only one corner slightly bumped from use.
