A British historian and statesman, Trevelyon began writing the book, publishing its six volumes in serial form, after he left the House of Commons in 1897. The first volume was published in 1899. He finished the history’s sixth and final volume sixteen year later; it was published in 1914.

A year later, this 1915 six volume “New Edition” was published by Longmans, Green, & Co., presented with small edits and corrections and as a uniformed set.  All of the six volumes have color lithographed folding maps at the rear. Volume VI has three maps and Volume I has a frontispiece illustration.

A liberal member of parliament from 1865, Sir George Otto Trevelyan, Bart. served in all four of William Gladstone's administrations. He is remembered for his part in the political events surrounding Gladstone's introduction of Irish Home Rule in 1886, which Trevelyan first opposed and then later supported. Trevelyan's historical works include the Early History of Charles James Fox (1880) and these six volumes on the American Revolution. His biography of his uncle Lord Macaulay, His Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay published in 1876,  is also very well regarded.
