38-Star Hand-Cut & Sewn American Flag, Circa 1877

This is a striking original 38-star United States flag. A wonderful celebration of our nations early history, this flag is an authentic antique, dating circa 1877-1890.

The hand-cut and sewn American flag is field flag size. US field flags typically measure 6 feet 8 inches hoist by 12 feet fly and are flown by the military when distinguished guests are present.

The 38th star was added for the admission of Colorado, which occurred on August 1, 1876. Per the Third Flag Act of 1818, stars were not officially added until the 4th of July following a state's addition. For this reason, 37 was the official star count for the American flag in 1876 and the 38 star flag became the official United States flag on July 4th, 1877. The 38 star flag flew for thirteen years, through 1890. Five presidents served under this flag: Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881), James A. Garfield (1881), Chester A. Arthur (1881-1885), Grover Cleveland (1885-1889), and Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893).

Each of the 38 stars is hand cut and sewn on the flag. Star pattern is irregular, with vertical count of 7/6/7/6/5/7. Two holes in the blue field of the canton, one of the holes extends into a star’s point. Flag design is completed by 13 vertical red and white alternating stripes. The initials J.C.T. are hand-embroidered, one letter each, on the 6th, 7th, and 8th vertical stripes. Stains are present throughout the stripes, an indicator of previous use and wear typical of the flag’s age. Some minimal fraying is present along the hoist side.

Flag measures 6 feet 1 inch hoist by 11 feet 5 inch fly.

The flag is presented in a custom wooden display box which measures 21 1/2" H x 13 1/2" W x 4 1/2" D.
