Offered is a signed and inscribed stated first edition of General Alexander Archer Vandegrift's autobiography Once a Marine, The Memoirs of General A.A. Vandegrift, as told to Robert B. Asprey. The book was written in conjunction with Asprey and was published out of New York in 1964 by W.W. Norton & Company Inc. The book is signed and inscribed on the title page by Vandegrift in blue ink, reading "To Thomas Berry, with all good wishes, AA. Vandergrift General USMC.”
Once a Marine details A.A. Vandergrift’s (1887-1973) actions as Commanding Officer of the First Marine Division at Guadalcanal. Vandegrift was a United States Marine Corps four-star general, the first four-star general on active duty in the Marine Corps. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Solomon Islands campaign of 1942 and later became the 18th Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1944-1947.
Overall very good condition. Original dust jacket, protected in mylar, shows some light shelfwear. Light bumping to boards. Bold signature and inscription in blue ink on full title page. Housed in a custom, archival slipcase with the image of Vandegrift on one side.
