Colin Powell’s life and career presents a wonderful example of the American dream. Born to Jamaican immigrant parents, he grew up in Harlem. Powell eventually joined the Army and moved through the ranks to become a four star general and later a well-known politician. While in the Army, he fought in Vietnam, served at the Pentagon, and participated in the Panama Invasion as well as Desert Storm. The book begins with a selection of black and white photos from Powell’s life and the story covers his early years in Harlem through his chairmanship of the Joint Chief of Staff. Powell’s autobiography is full of humor, military directness, and a strong love for his country.
