Colin Powell’s life and career presents a wonderful example of the American dream. Born to Jamaican immigrant parents, he grew up in Harlem. Powell eventually joined the Army and moved through the ranks to become a four star general, and later, a well-known politician. While in the Army, he fought in Vietnam, served at the Pentagon, and participated in the Panama Invasion as well as Desert Storm.

My American Journey begins with a selection of black and white photos from Powell’s life and the story covers his early years in Harlem through his chairmanship of the Joint Chief of Staff. Powell’s autobiography is a wonderful balance of humor, military directness, and a strong love for his country.
