Magnificent Desolation: The Long Journey Home from the Moon is the second of two autobiographical books written by Edwin Eugene “Buzz” Aldrin Jr., the former Apollo 11 astronaut. Aldrin , with Neil Armstrong, successfully completed the first human landing on the Moon. "Magnificent desolation" were some of the first words that Aldrin said once he set foot on the Moon. The 2009 book concentrates on the period after his return from space and delves deeper into his personal and emotional life after the epic Apollo mission.
The book illuminates many of the difficulties he had in coping with his instant world-wide fame following the achievement. He writes candidly about personal difficulties, including depression, the breakup of his marriage, and the isolation and loss of a sense of purpose after leaving the NASA program. The book is a raw and true look at an astronaut’s down-to-earth experiences. The Guardian said of the book: "Aldrin removes his space helmet and shows us the very human face of an all-American hero."
